Design
Due to the style and content of the program it was key that students began their thinking about their learning, their potential career direction and their professional self early in the program. As a generalist undergraduate degree it is often challenging for a student to see the “end goal” where a specific career or profession is not the result, therefore early thinking in this regard is paramount.
Based on this direction the design was created so that students would create an ePortfolio at the end of each year level to demonstrate and ultimately showcase the evidence they had created and reflected on throughout their degree. The initial principles for year level submissions were: • At end of Level 1 - highly structured and designed to support student’s pedagogical and technological understanding of developing an ePortfolio. • At end of Level 2 - less structured and designed to enable the student to curate evidence from their life and education towards building their ePortfolio and seek an internship or placement. • At end of Level 3 – builds on the previous year’s ePortfolio and incorporates the knowledge and skills required for the student’s potential field of employment with the aim of being able to present to a prospective employer. The design of the program was such that ePortfolios were to be used across a variety of units in the first year which would build students technological and pedagogical understanding of an ePortfolio. There was also a detailed "first year experience" orientation based on resources, orientation, workshops and ongoing online communications. A discussion surrounding the implementation of the initiatives including the challenges and issues can be found here. |
Based on these challenges for the second iteration of the level 1 ePortfolio task changes were implemented. These included:
